McFarland Hole-in-One: Scott McFarland of Lawrence used an eight-iron to ace the par three, 145-yard No. 6 hole May 14 at Campestre CC in Juarez, Mexico. Witnesses were John McFarland and Howard Kauhn of Topeka, and Mark McFarland of Las Cruces, N.M.

  • Chadwick Ninth: Lawrence’s Joyia Chadwick, a sophomore at Williams College, finished ninth in the heptathlon at the NCAA Div. III Outdoor track championships last week in Canton, N.Y. Chadwick scored 4,357 points. Annie Vanderlaan of Calvin College won the competition with 4,852 points.

  • Bike Race Tonight: Cycle Works Twilight Bike Race for children and adults will begin at 6:30 tonight at the south end of Haskell Indian Nations University. Children need a helmet and a parent must sign a waiver. Adults will compete around a half-mile loop.

  • Conroy JGC Champ: Randy Conroy shot a 71 and won last Sunday’s Jayhawk Golf Club tournament at Alvamar by two strokes over Chad Roesler. Van Reichert was third with a 76. In net, Don Shulenberg shot a 70, two shots better than Scott Reichert, Mike Stein and Tom Taylor.
  • MAYB Tourney: Deadline is June 20 to sign up for a grades 4-12 Mid-America Youth Basketball Tournament July 11-13 at Sport 2 Sport. For information, call 843-4263.

  • Phenix-Riling Second: Lawrence Phenix-Riling U-14 team finished second at Trusler’s Opening Day Fast-Pitch Tournament last Saturday in Emporia. Team members are Kim Gilges, Karen Spence, Emily Leiker, Samantha Hackathorn, Mariah Riling, Tricia Dunham, Emily Lamb, Charley Jo Schwartz, Haley Breitenbach, Kassidi Anderson, Chelsey Titus and Ciara Grame-Caughron.   • Strikers Tryouts: Lawrence Strikers premier girls soccer team will hold tryouts for multiple U-15 to U-19 teams every Monday and Wednesday through mid-July starting at 7:30 p.m. June 16 at the Free State practice field.   • Phenix-Fyler Wins Tourney: Lawrence Phenix-Fyler U-14 fast-team team won a tournament last weekend in Raytown, Mo., winning all six games they played. Sierra Wright was the winning pitcher in three of the games. Hit leaders were Hannah Somers, LaDonna Weien, Molly Fyler and Jordan Van Houtan. Other team members are Kelsey Harrison, Sydney Seratte, Amanda Weishaar, Ashley Geist, Julianne George, Jordan Lockwood and Annie Hannon. Coaches are Randy Fyler, Steve Seratte, Teri George and Lloyd Van Houtan.

  • Demarest Cited: Dordt College’s Rebecca Demarest, a senior from Lawrence, earned a spot on the NAIA Scholar-Athlete track and field list. Demarest, a Baldwin High product, was a distance runner for the Defenders.
