Roberts announces ‘town hall’ meetings

Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., will be in Johnson County today and Friday for meetings with constituents.

From 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., Roberts will conduct a town-hall meeting at Olathe City Hall, City Council Room, 100 E. Santa Fe St. He’ll also lead a town-hall meeting from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Johnson County Community College, General Education Building, Room 233, 12345 College Blvd., Overland Park.

Roberts, pictured above left in a Sunday interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” also will lead two meetings Friday, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Lenexa Conference Center at the Historic Lackman-Thompson Estate, 11180 Lackman Road; and from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Sylvester Powell Community Center, meeting rooms A and B, 6200 Martway St., Mission.

Sesquicentennial group seeks opinions on plaza

The Lawrence Sesquicentennial Commission wants to know what residents think about a proposed amphitheater and plaza to mark the city’s 150th birthday in 2004.

The commission will meet from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday to receive feedback as it puts together a legacy project for the Lawrence Sesquicentennial.

The meeting will be at the proposed amphitheater site.

The site is north of the off-leash dog park and east of Clinton Lake. To find it, take Clinton Parkway east to Dam Road and turn left. Turn left from Dam Road onto East 902 Road and left again onto the road that goes by the dog park. Turn left into the proposed area.

Awards: KU students rank ninth in journalism contest

Students at the Kansas University School of Journalism placed ninth out of 105 universities competing in the annual journalism competition sponsored by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.

Eight KU students placed in the awards, often called the “Pulitzers of college journalism.”

Honorees were Lindsay Hanson, Concordia junior, 14th place in in-depth writing; Doyle Murphy, Baldwin senior, 18th in sports writing; John Nowak, Olathe senior, 17th in photojournalism feature and personality profile; Nathan Dayani, Prairie Village senior, 13th in profile writing; Adam Pracht, Emporia junior, fifth in profile writing; Eve Lamborn, Colorado Springs, Colo., May graduate, fifth in feature writing; Ryan Wood, Lee’s Summit, Mo., May graduate, 12th in sports writing; Michael Bieke, Powell, Wyo., 19th in broadcast news.
