Golfers tee off busy week for Ottawa

Cyclones sending athletes to state golf, track, baseball, softball

State Tournament Week for Ottawa High will begin today when the Cyclones’ boys golf team travels to Garden City for the Class 4A championships at Buffalo Dunes Golf Club.

Ottawa earned an opportunity to battle for the state title by finishing runner-up to Topeka Hayden at last week’s regional at Ottawa Country Club.

Cyclones scheduled to play in today’s 18-hole championship are Jarod Sigmund, Drew Waldron, Brian Killough, Justin Griest, Ryan Kaub and Eric Punderstadt.

Ottawa High’s softball and baseball teams also qualified last week to compete in the 4A state tournaments this weekend in Mulvane, and the Cyclones’ track team will head to the state championships in Wichita this weekend after a strong showing at last Friday’s regional at Lansing.

The Ottawa boys were second to Lansing in the team standings. Caleb Blakesley won the shot put (54-9 1/2) and the discus (147-4), Tim Shields the 200 (23.3) and the 4×400 relay team captured the gold medal in a time of 3:31.10.

Ottawa’s girls tied for 10th in the team standings, but Lisa Morrisey won the 800 (2:26.5) and the 1,600 (5:29.7).
