Bonds’ return delayed

Denver — The San Francisco Giants pushed Barry Bonds’ return back at least a day after the slugger still had soreness in his right knee following batting practice Monday. Giants trainer Stan Conte said the swelling in Bonds’ knee was gone, but he was still quite sore. Manager Felipe Alou hoped to have the five-time MVP back for the start of a two-game series against Arizona tonight, but said it will be at least Wednesday before he can play again.

Cards shelve Vina

St. Louis — The St. Louis Cardinals placed second baseman Fernando Vina on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a severely torn right hamstring, an injury that will sideline him for six-to-12 weeks.

Blue Jays lose Hinske

Toronto — Toronto third baseman Eric Hinske will undergo surgery on his right hand and is expected to miss four-to-six weeks. Last year’s AL Rookie of the Year was placed on the 15-day disabled list. He will undergo surgery Wednesday.
