Cemetery ceremonies to honor fallen soldiers

Ceremonies at three cemeteries Monday will honor fallen military personnel:

7 a.m.: Avenue of Flags flag-raisings, Oak Hill Cemetery, 1605 Oak Hill Ave.

9 a.m.: Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars ceremonies to honor fallen military personnel, Maple Grove Cemetery, junction of U.S. Highways 24 and 40.

10:10 a.m.: American Legion formal ceremonies to honor fallen military personnel, Oak Hill Cemetery, 1605 Oak Hill Ave. Includes a 21-gun salute and speech by State Rep. Barbara Ballard, D-Lawrence. American flags that covered the caskets of 375 deceased veterans will be on display with the veteran’s name and directions to find the grave.

11 a.m.: Veterans of Foreign Wars ceremonies to honor fallen military personnel, Memorial Park Cemetery, 1517 E. 15th St.

Leavenworth county: Topekan dies, passenger injured in ATV rollover

Tonganoxie — A Topeka man was killed and his passenger injured early Saturday when the all-terrain vehicle they were riding overturned.

The Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Department said Randall D. Zeit, 33, was killed. Injured was Robert M. Gunkel II, Leavenworth.

The accident occurred about 3:30 a.m. on 234th Street at Honey Creek Road — an area where the gravel road has a series of S-curves — about four miles southwest of Tonganoxie, the sheriff’s report said.

Both victims were tossed from the vehicle, which landed on top of Zeit. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gunkel suffered a broken arm but was able to go to a nearby residence for help. He was taken by ambulance to KU Med, where he was in fair condition Saturday afternoon.

Alcohol and speed appeared to be contributing factors in the accident, officers said.

Crime: Authorities seek help in solving tool thefts

Douglas County Sheriff’s officials want the public’s help solving a series of tool thefts from barns and sheds in the southeast part of the county.

There have been at least seven such burglaries in the past three months, Lt. Ken Massey said. Among the items stolen: hand tools, power tools and generators.

People with information are asked to call 843-TIPS and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
