Washington, D.C.: Cheney scraps speech to remain in capital

Vice President Dick Cheney canceled his commencement address today at Louisiana State University, saying he wanted to remain in Washington in case he is needed to break a tie vote on tax cuts.

His wife, Lynne, was to give the speech in his place.

The vice president spent much of Wednesday and Thursday around the Capitol, brokering a deal that would bring $330 billion in tax cuts over the next decade. The full Senate was expected to vote today. As president of the Senate, Cheney would be tapped to cast a tiebreaking vote.
