Students find Lawrence mislocated in textbook

? A map in a National Geographic textbook mistakenly shows Lawrence in western Kansas instead of northeast Kansas. And it was a group of Erie Elementary School fourth-graders studying literature who pointed out the geography error to the company.

Teacher Sharon Grommet first saw the mistake in the National Geographic Reading Expeditions book “Communities Across America Today,” which her students use as part of their literature circles.

“I actually noticed the error and then told the students that there was an error in the book and had them find it,” Grommet said.

Grommet said she was surprised by the mistake, but also found it funny.

“This is a big company known for reporting on leading social studies and science issues,” Grommet said.

Rowdy Kyser was the first student to notice the error.

“Did they do that right?” Rowdy said he asked himself when he found the error.

The class eventually sent a letter and a map of Kansas with Lawrence highlighted to National Geographic.

The company sent an apology and assured students the map would be corrected when the next book is printed.
