Regional Tennis: Lions’ Elwell champion

? Lawrence High will send a regional champion to the state tennis tournament, and Free State will send a regional runner-up and a doubles team.

Lawrence’s Scott Elwell beat Free State’s Ben Cropp, 6-0, 6-0, for the regional championship Tuesday at Kossover Tennis Center. The regional began Monday but was postponed because of inclement weather.

Both Elwell and Cropp will advance to state, which will be held Friday and Saturday in Manhattan. Free State’s doubles team of Eyad Safadi and Matt Schwabauer placed fourth and also will play at state.

“Scott was ready to play both days,” LHS coach Dick Wedel said. “He had excellent focus in all of today’s matches. He played a ‘no-prisoners’ style. I think he’s wanting to be as ready as he can be for state.”

Olathe East won the regional team title with nine points and was followed by Free State (8), Topeka (7), Olathe South (5) and Lawrence (5).

“This is our highest finish ever at regionals, and Ben Cropp is the first singles player ever in the program to qualify,” FSHS coach Jon Renberger said. “And Safadi and Schwabauer played three tough three-set matches and certainly proved they are among the best teams in the state.”
