Federal Agency to open disaster recovery center

More help is on the way for victims of the May 8 tornado that struck southwest Lawrence.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will open a mobile disaster recovery center at 9:30 a.m. today at Clinton Parkway Assembly of God Church, 3200 Clinton Parkway.

FEMA representatives will answer questions and provide information about various federal assistance programs, including those that offer low-interest loans from the Small Business Administration.

The FEMA recovery center in Lawrence will be open until 6 p.m. daily through Friday and from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Courts: Suspect pleads guilty in motel beating case

One of the five defendants in a beating and robbery earlier this year at the Jayhawk Motel, 1004 N. 3rd St., pleaded guilty on Tuesday to aggravated battery.

Sara M. Bruce, 19, Emporia, admitted that she played a role in the March 10 attack on 21-year-old Josh Greemore after he came into the motel room where Bruce was staying with four men.

Greemore was robbed, beaten, bound, stabbed and then left at Riverfront Park.

Charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery were dropped as part of the plea agreement. Bruce will appear June 20 for sentencing.

Education: Lawrence district offers summer school courses

The Lawrence public school district continues to accept applications for summer-school courses.

Elementary school students can enroll in art, science, drama, creative writing, basic skills writing, French, Spanish, reading and math classes, which will be taught from June 2 to June 26 at Schwegler School, 2201 Ousdahl Road.

Each class is two hours long and tuition is $80 per class. No classes are conducted on Fridays.

Students from districts outside Lawrence will be accepted.

Bill Snead shares highlights of his interview with Dr. Phil Stevens on “Snapshots with Snead.” Stevens has been practicing medicine in Tonganoxie for nearly 50 years.

Palliative care at Lawrence Memorial Hospital is the subject of this week’s “Better Health.”
