Baseball Roundup: Eudora tumbles to Piper

? Two weeks ago, Eudora High’s baseball team had dreams of a state championship thanks to the school’s best-ever 14-2 record.

Tuesday night, the Cardinals suffered their third straight loss — 7-3 to Kansas City Piper — and saw their dream season come to a nightmarish end.

“I don’t know what happened,” said Cardinals’ clean-up hitter Troy VanHorn, who powered a solo home run over the right-field wall in the third to put Eudora ahead 3-0.

But Piper’s Tyler Lynnes peppered a homer of his own — a grand slam in the fifth that put the Pirates ahead 5-3 and sucked the life out of the Cardinals.

“We came out fine, we hit the ball hard and we were playing well,” said first-year EHS coach Dirk Kinney. “But that grand slam flustered us a bit, and we faltered.”

Eudora pitcher Rod Evinger — who struck out six Pirates in the first four innings — was pulled immediately after Lynnes’ 330-foot line drive to left, and the Cardinals never calmed down.

Only one of Eudora’s last 11 batters recorded a hit, and the Cardinals went down in order in their final opportunity in the bottom of the seventh.

Despite the three straight losses, Kinney tried to put his team’s monumental season in perspective.

“It’s important that we remember that even though we lost six great seniors, without their help, the foundation for Eudora’s baseball future wouldn’t have been possible,” Kinney said.
