Field day fun suits everyone

Outdoor play just in time for summer

Prom might be what graduates most remember about school, but for those who haven’t received their diploma yet, field day evokes memories of frolic and freeze tag.

Throughout the Lawrence school district, elementary classes took a break for games like fireman’s relay, sponge relay, zap the whale and tug-of-war for May field days.

Now if only the high schools would work in a game of kickball between finals.

“Field day was awesome. It was my favorite day of school,” said Amy Lavaveshkul, Free State High School junior.

And when summer is only days away, it’s nice to get out of the classroom for a little bit.

“I think they enjoy being active, and most like being outside,” said Christy Hunt, physical education teacher at Broken Arrow and New York schools, whose Broken Arrow students had field day May 12.

Joe Baird, a Broken Arrow first-grader, said he appreciated time outside of the classroom.

Dominic Coover, 5, rolls a big ball during a race event at Broken Arrow School's field day at Broken Arrow Park, 2900 La. The annual school event was May 12.

“I like (field day) because it’s at the end of the year. Some students also enjoy it because they’re outside all day and get to miss their regular classes,” he said. “And older students wish they could still have field day.”

Eighth-grader Stephen Mockry would agree with that.

“I think it would be cool to have field day again,” he said. “It was really fun, and I missed it.”

No matter what your age, you can plan your own field day, so start picking your red rover teams now. All Lawrence students will be out of school by Friday.
