City Baseball: Firebirds, LHS vie for state berth

Odds are, a Lawrence team is going to the Class 6A state baseball tournament.

Whether it’s Free State or Lawrence High is anyone’s guess.

The Firebirds (16-3) and Lions (15-4) enter today’s regional at FSHS Field as the top two seeds in the four-team tournament. The team that wins two games advances to next Friday’s first round at Maize.

“We’re confident we can win, but so is Lawrence High. So is Leavenworth. I imagine Wyandotte feels the same way,” FSHS coach Mike Hill said. “Certainly, we’ve had a wonderful year, but the other three teams aren’t gonna just write us a free ticket.”

The Firebirds, the state’s top-ranked team, have to get by what Hill calls a dangerous Leavenworth team at 4:30 p.m. for a spot in the championship. The Pioneers (5-14) might be the best team in the state with five wins.

Hill offers examples of a 1-0 loss to third-ranked Shawnee Mission Northwest, a 5-4 loss to Olathe North and the Firebirds’ 4-1 win against Leavenworth April 22 as examples.

“When they’ve got (Glen) Lemke and (John) Bromell on the mound, they’re a different team,” Hill said, dismissing a foregone LHS-FSHS championship matchup. “We haven’t spent one iota thinking about a game against Lawrence High. We’re only worried about Leavenworth.”

The Lions, on the other hand, face a Kansas City Wyandotte (3-8) team at 2 p.m. that probably isn’t as dangerous.

Plus, LHS is on a roll, having won its last six games.

“We’re playing as well as we’ve played all year,” LHS coach David Petry said. “Our pitching has been consistent all year, our defense has had some peaks and valleys and our offense has come alive lately. That’s good, too because it gives our pitches some confidence when we produce runs.”

No kidding. The Lions rolled up 78 runs during their six-game streak.

The Lions reached the state tournament in each of Petry’s first three years as coach, winning the state title in 2000 and finishing third the last two years.

Before the season started, he said this group of players didn’t want to be the ones to snap that streak. Even when the Lions lost three of four games in April, that goal was firmly in place.

“I don’t think that’s ever changed,” Petry said. “They know they’re talented enough. They know there’s gonna be some obstacles in front of us, but I don’t think their approach has changed at all lately.”

Petry wasn’t sure who would pitch the first game, but was confident any of his seniors — Ryan Rowland, Spence Chaney, Aaron Madill and Taylor Martin — could pitch a complete game.

Hill wishes he had those worries.

FSHS senior Matt Lane (7-1) will pitch against Leavenworth, but Hill was uncertain about the championship. If the Firebirds reach the championship game, it’ll be their second appearance in the school’s six year history. They lost to Leavenworth, 2-0, in 1999.

The Firebirds are coming off an 11-1 win against Blue Valley North, in which they finally produced some much-needed offense.

“I don’t think we’ve played our best baseball lately,” Hill said. “We’ve been a little inconsistent offensively, leaving some runners on base. All clubs go through that, we just hope we’ve come out of that.”

If the third LHS-FSHS matchup of the season does happen — the Firebirds won the first game, 8-7 in nine innings while the second game was canceled after 4 1/3 innings because of inclement weather — it could be a spectacular.

Considering the stakes and the teams involved, one would expect nothing less.

“You look at the game we played before, and even the one that got canceled, and we’re pretty even,” Petry said. “The team that wins that game will be one that pitches well, plays good defense and gets some timely hits.”
