IN 1978

The administration building at Baker University was to be dedicated as the Constant Hall for Administration. The structure was to honor the late J.L. “Tommy” Constant, longtime Lawrence builder, city commissioner and civic leader.

IN 1903

From the Lawrence Daily World of May 17, 1903: “F. Barteldes & Co. will pay 40 cents per bushel for soft maple seed if brought in early next week. …

“It has been apparent that Mayor A.L. Selig for some time has been overworked. The combined cares of his large insurance business, building association and bonds together with municipal affairs are greater than he can handle. As a result, an interest in the insurance business has been sold to R.C. Manley, who will take entire charge of the fire and tornado business. R.C. Manley is no stranger here. He has been a student, practicing lawyer and police judge.”
