KVSA Classic Cup on Tap: Thirty youth teams from Lawrence and Ottawa will compete in four age divisions this weekend in the Kaw Valley Soccer Assn. Classic Cup at Youth Sports Inc. fields. Competition will begin Friday evening and conclude Sunday with championship games at 3 p.m. (U9 and U10 girls and coed), 4:30 p.m. (U10 boys) and 6 p.m. (U12 and U14).

  • Veritas Honorees: Sports award winners at Veritas Christian School are Jenna Pash, Aileen Doll, Madi Fisher and Kristin Strom for volleyball; Kimber Wilson, Whitney Schwaab and Strom for girls basketball; Mark Randtke, Brandon Hash, Zachary Hertzel and Jesse Schultz for football; and Andrew Bartlow, James Hightree and Randtke for boys basketball. Strom was named MVP in both girls sports. Randtke was MVP in boys basketball.

  • Aquahawks Best: Sarah Marlow and Alex Brunfeldt have been named the most outstanding Lawrence Aquahawks’ senior age-group swimmers this season. Other age-group winners were Heather Clark, Andrew Locke, Caitlin Gallagher, Cameron Case, Katie Swank, Chase Torgerson, Ashley Jackson, Ashley Robinson and Anthony Portela. Breakout awards went to Emma Reaney, Reed Grabill, Katie Sloan, Daniel Wolff, Chelsea Dirks-Ham, Eric Sparks, Chris Wolff, Chris Sellon and Jill Courtney. Other award winners were Elle Weber and Alex Leland.

  • State Mat Meet: The State Freestyle/Greco-Roman Wrestling Tournament is set for May 31-June 1 at Baldwin High. For information, check the Web site at www.usawks.com.

  • Forkenbeck Leader: Scott Forkenbeck compiled the best time of nine Lawrence runners entered in the Lincoln, Neb., Marathon. Forkenbeck was timed in 3:17:26. Other city competitors were Scott Coston (3:24:03), William Eakin (3:29:09), Stacy Fagan (3:49:19), Rich Yeakel (3:59:24), Shannon Garner (4:23:13), Kevin Garner (4:23:14), Mike Williams (4:34:46) and Laura Graham (5:16:29).

  • LGA Tourneys: Lawrence Golf Assn.’s annual City Championship is set for July 19-20 at Alvamar and Eagle Bend. The City Senior will be June 14-15 at the same courses. The LGA two-man best-ball tournament will be Sept. 13-14 at Eagle Bend. For information, visit the Web at www.lawrencegolf.com.

  • Alvamar Junior Golf: Applications are available for the Alvamar Golf Club Junior Program. Class will run once a week during June, starting June 3. For information, call 842-1907.
  • Alvamar Women Lead: Alvamar’s teams of Charneil Swenson and Jackie Fromm, Elaine Brady and Darlene Allen, June Adams and Vickie Friend and Bebe Arbuckle and Connie Winters won Monday’s Kansas City Area Women’s Golf League meet at Loch Lloyd. After two meets, Alvamar leads the standings with 96 points. Loch Lloyd is second at 84 and Brookridge third with 80.

  • Ichelson Takes Tourney: Chris Ichelson shot a 71 and won last Saturday’s Jayhawk Golf Club weekly tournament at Alvamar by a stroke over Chad Roesler. Randy Conroy was third with a 74. In net play, Scott Reichert was low with a 69. Mike McNelly had a 70. Chris Conroy and Pete Whitenight each carded a 71.

  • Wilson, Heitzman 4-5: Dick Wilson of Lawrence and Paul Heitzman of Eudora had the fourth and fifth fastest 10K times in the country in the 70-74 age group last year, according to U.S. Masters rankings. Wilson’s best was 42:20; Heitzman’s 42:21. Last Saturday in Wichita, Heitzman won the ages 70-74 River Run 10K for the fourth straight year. His time was 44:49.

  • Phenix U-12 Champs: Lawrence Phenix U-12 softball team won a tournament last weekend in Blue Springs, Mo., and boosted its record to 10-1. Team members are Krystal Bateson, Callie Craig and Tracie Weege from Baldwin; Tamalei Good from Wellsville; Theresa Harper and Brittany Murphy from Eudora; Jori Graf and Shelby Miller from Ottawa; and Kalli McClure, Cassie Potter, Natalie Reschke and Kylie Waite from Lawrence. Coaches are Jay Rusk, Jamie Rusk, Trenda Reschke and Brad Graf.

  • Benefit Golf: The Tisha Downing Memorial Golf Tournament is set for June 21 at Alvamar. Part of the proceeds will go to a scholarship fund at Eudora High. Mrs. Downing died in an auto accident last December. For information, call Kim Downing at (913) 845-2435 or Ron Downing at 331-7755.

  • KVSA Summer Camps: Kaw Valley Soccer Assn. will offer five camps this summer at YSI fields — Camp America (June 9-13), Discovery-Hobbits (June 16-20), All-Girls Skill (June 23-27), Striker-Goalkeeper (June 30-July 2) and Soccer Exploration (July 7-11). For information, call KVSA at 749-5872.

  • Sprow Tops YABA: Dequesne Sprow won $1,100 in college scholarships as grand champion of the Lawrence Young American Bowling Alliance tournament. Other divisional winners were Josh Herschell and Brent Ott. They won $600 apiece. Second-place prizes of $400 went to Tyler Bradshaw, Aaron Bernhardt and Connor Kring. Thirds and $300 were collected by Christina Bernhardt, Andy Foerschler and Baylie Moon. Fourths and $200 went to Kenny Altman, Ben Wyatt and Sara Golden.

  • KU Soccer Camps: Kansas University soccer coaches have several camps slated this summer, including two girls sessions. Also on tap is a boys residential camp. All are scheduled in late July. In addition, KU soccer will conduct a camp for youths in kindergarten through fifth grade. For information, call Kelly Miller at 864-3560.
