Lions pummel Pioneers

? The Lawrence High baseball squad made real sure Leavenworth’s seniors didn’t end their home careers on a positive note.

The Lions pummelled the Pioneers twice Monday, 19-2 in three innings and 16-1 in four innings. Both games were called because of the 15-run rule on Senior Night in Leavenworth.

Those poor seniors.

“Everything we hit seemed to be hard, whether it was a single or a home run,” LHS coach David Petry said. “We didn’t get many cheap hits.”

But the Lions did get a lot of hits — 33 for the doubleheader.

Senior Tommy Mangino led the LHS barrage, going a combined 5-for-7 with four runs, six RBIs and two home runs, including a grand slam. Senior Taylor Martin also had a grand slam, and junior Carl Lisher was a combined 6-for-7 with five runs, six RBIs, a double and a three-run homer. Junior Ryan Engle scored four runs and had five RBIs, junior John Parker had a run and three RBIs …

You get the picture.

“I just think we have some kids that are seeing the ball well right now,” said Petry, providing the day’s biggest understatement.

Petry also lauded his team’s strong defensive play, which, combined with the Lions’ hitting, meant Leavenworth was pretty much doomed.

“To go two games without getting an error means we played pretty well defensively,” Petry said.

Lawrence (15-4) hopes to keep rolling right into Friday’s continuation of a suspended game against Free State. The teams play at 5 p.m. at Ice Field.
