Mangino delivers for LHS

Catcher's double key hit in Lawrence's big inning

Credit the walks — and Tommy Mangino.

Lawrence High defeated Shawnee Mission Northwest in baseball, 10-6, Tuesday at Ice Field, improving the Lions’ record to 13-4 and putting on a hitting show for the Senior Night crowd.

Five of the LHS runs resulted from batters who walked, and most of the rest were thanks to a three-run double by senior catcher Mangino in the fourth inning.

SMNW pitchers walked of seven Lawrence batters and hit another Lion with a pitch. LHS, the 10th-ranked team in Class 6A, also strung together 11 hits against the No. 4-ranked Cougars.

“I thought our kids swung the bat real well,” LHS coach David Petry said. “I don’t want to talk about some of these kids … I don’t want to jinx them.”

Northwest made a run at the Lions in the top of the seventh inning, racking up four hits — including a double — and three runs before third baseman Aaron Madill relieved Taylor Martin on the mound.

But the Cougars’ rally fell short, thanks mostly to the lead provided by a big fourth inning, started with base hits by Kyle McManness, Ryan Engel and Matt Johnson.

With no outs and the bases loaded, Mangino came to the plate hoping to follow suit.

“I was thinking, ‘Put the ball in play and see what happens,'” he said. “I was thinking base hit.”

What he got was a deep drive to left-center and three RBIs.

The three base runners came in, and courtesy runner Brett Urban replaced Mangino at second base.

Urban stole third and scored on a hit by designated hitter Carl Lisher.

Petry said that he was disappointed with some early errors made by the Lions and that baserunning also could improve. But he pointed out that the Cougars were 14-4 and ranked fourth in 6A.

“I was pretty happy overall,” he said. “This game gives us a lot of confidence.”

The Lions play a doubleheader today at Leavenworth.
