Expos’ Hernandez undergoes surgery

San Francisco — Montreal Expos pitcher Orlando Hernandez underwent surgery on his injured right shoulder Monday. Hernandez, on the disabled list since spring training, is expected to be out at least three more months — though the Expos have not ruled out a return this season.

The arthroscopic procedure was performed by Dr. John Uribe to repair a small tear in El Duque’s rotator cuff.

Hernandez, who totaled nine wins while appearing in each of the last five postseasons with the New York Yankees, was acquired in a three-team deal that sent Bartolo Colon to the Chicago White Sox Jan. 15.

He made two spring training starts before experiencing pain in his right shoulder. The Expos placed him on the 15-day DL before the beginning of the season.

Griffey plans to join Reds on road trip

Cincinnati — Ken Griffey Jr. is joining the Reds on a road trip this week as he works his way back from a shoulder injury that has sidelined him since early April.

The team won’t say when the center fielder will return to the lineup, although it is highly unlikely he will play on the road trip.

Griffey, who separated his right shoulder while diving for a ball, was looking forward to flying with the Reds to St. Louis to open the trip tonight.

“They’re letting me out of the dungeon,” he said. “At least, I’ll be able to do something.”

Griffey was injured April 5 and placed on the disabled list two days later. He was projected to miss six-to-10 weeks.
