Texas: Mother charged with killing two sons

A woman was charged with capital murder in the deaths of two of her sons Saturday after calling 911 and saying, “I’ve just killed my boys.”

When deputies arrived at the New Chapel Hill home of Deanna Laney shortly before 1 a.m., they found the bodies of two of her sons in a shadowy corner of the front yard. The boys, ages 6 and 8, were in their underwear with large rocks on top of them.

Her 14-month-old son was found alive but bleeding in his crib with a pillow over his face and massive head injuries. The baby was in critical condition late Saturday at a hospital.

Laney, 38, was jailed on charges of capital murder and aggravated assault. Bail was set at $3 million.

California: Human skulls brought to school show-and-tell

A 12-year-old Covina girl brought three human skulls to her school for show-and-tell.

The girl said she obtained the skulls from her grandmother, who said she found them in the trash at her mobile home park, police said.

After reading a newspaper article on Saturday, Catherine Knoll of Duarte contacted Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies and said the skulls had belonged to her late husband, said Sheriff’s Lt. David Brown.

“She said her late husband, William Knoll, had acquired the skulls in Europe in 1967 and returned to the United States with them,” he said. “She disposed of them in the nearest trash container, which is where they were found.”

Florida: Budget shortfall closes state philharmonic

The Florida Philharmonic suspended operations Saturday after officials failed to come up with $500,000 to pay their musicians for the next month.

The orchestra’s 80 musicians were told not to come to rehearsal Saturday or to work Monday, but the financially strapped organization has not yet filed for bankruptcy.
