Big day ahead for grads

Students in the Class of 2003 will receive diplomas in commencements this month across the area. Beginning this weekend, thousands of students will take the stage to celebrate earning high school diplomas and bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees.

Rain-out information and venue changes will be available on the Journal-World’s Web site, www.ljworld.com. The newspaper also will run lists of all area high school graduates in the coming weeks.

Here is a list of area commencements:

High schools

  • Baldwin High School — Noon Saturday at Baldwin Junior High School.
  • Bishop Seabury Academy — 9 a.m. May 23 at Plymouth Congregational Church. Baccalaureate service at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Episcopal Church followed by senior dinner at Alvamar at 7 p.m. Thursday.
  • Eudora High School — 2:30 p.m. May 25 at the high school gym.
  • Free State High School — 4 p.m. May 25 at Kansas Memorial Stadium. Graduation will be moved to Allen Field House in case of inclement weather. The school is not sponsoring a baccalaureate service.
  • Lawrence High School — 1 p.m. May 25 at Kansas Memorial Stadium. Graduation will be moved to Allen Field House in case of inclement weather.
  • McLouth High School — 4 p.m. Saturday at Gold Gym in McLouth High School.
  • Wellsville High School — 2 p.m. May 18 at the district stadium.
  • Ottawa High School — 2 p.m. May 18 at Steve Grogan Stadium.
  • DeSoto High School — 3:30 p.m. May 18 at the high school auditorium.
  • Oskaloosa High School — 3 p.m. May 18 at the high school gymnasium.
  • Tonganoxie High School — 7 p.m. Saturday at the high school football field in Tonganoxie.
  • Perry-Lecompton High School — 2 p.m. Saturday in the high school gymnasium.

Baldwin High School — Noon Saturday, Baldwin Junior High School gymnasium.

Colleges

  • Baker University — 1 p.m. May 18 at Collins Sports Center in Baldwin. Speaker: Mike Hoeflich, Kansas University law professor. Ceremony for School of Nursing and School of Professional and Graduate Studies at 4:30 p.m. Speaker: State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins. Baccalaureate service at 9:30 a.m., First United Methodist Church.
  • Benedictine College — 10 a.m. Saturday at the student union in Atchison. Speaker: Danny Abramowicz, former National Football League player. Baccalaureate: 4:30 p.m. Friday in the Abbey Church.
  • Donnelly College — 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Jack Reardon Civic Center, 500 Minn. Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Speaker: Dr. Frances Foster, a Kansas City ophthalmologist.
  • Johnson County Community College — 7:30 p.m. Friday in the college gymnasium. Speaker: James Daughterty, 2002 JCCC graduate and international president of Phi Theta Kappa.
  • Kansas City Kansas Community College — 8 p.m. May 21 in the college fieldhouse. Speaker: Janet Murguia, executive vice chancellor at Kansas University.
  • Kansas State University — Ceremonies at varying times and places Friday and Saturday in Manhattan and Salina. For details, call (785) 532-6415.
  • St. Mary College — 1 p.m. Saturday in Ryan Sports Center on Leavenworth campus. Speakers: Students Lori Beth Cervantes, Bennie May Avery and Don Gray.
  • Kansas University — 2:30 p.m. May 18, procession from the Campanile on Mount Oread to Memorial Stadium. No main speaker.
  • University of Missouri-Kansas City — Ceremonies at varying times May 23. Speakers include Edward D. Roberts, retired Missouri Supreme Court judge and others.
