Boy feeling better after being hit by liner

Arlington, Texas — A young boy hit near his left eye by Juan Gonzalez’s foul liner was doing fine Saturday, the Texas Rangers said.

The boy was struck in the ninth inning of the Cleveland-Texas game Friday night, then taken by stadium security personnel to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth.

Rangers spokesman John Blake said Saturday the boy was examined at the hospital and sent home without being admitted to the hospital. Blake said the boy still had some swelling, but appeared to have no permanent damage.

No other details, including the boy’s name, were released.

Rangers manager Buck Showalter and team president Michael Cramer spoke to the boy’s parents Saturday.

Martinez on schedule for his next start

Minneapolis — Boston’s Pedro Martinez, bothered by a sore right groin, will make his next scheduled start for the Red Sox against Texas Thursday.

Martinez, who allowed five runs and eight hits in a 5-0 loss at Minnesota Friday, felt pain in his groin while warming up for the fourth inning. Still, he pitched the fourth and the fifth innings before coming out of the game.

“He’s a little sore,” spokesman Kevin Shea said. “But, he rode the bike for close to an hour today.

“He will make his next start,” Shea said.

Martinez (3-2), who did not comment on the injury, has an ERA of 3.15 this year. The right-hander entered the season with a career 2.62 ERA.

“Hopefully it will be nothing serious, but we’ll see,” manager Grady Little said .
