John Brandon Nightingale, 18, was awarded Boy Scouting’s highest award of Eagle Scout during a ceremony May 3 at Westside Presbyterian Church. He is a member of Troop 55. For his Eagle project, he restored the outdoor classroom at Cordley School.

He began his scouting career as a Webelo at Cordley School. After obtaining the Arrow of Light, he joined Troop 55 in 1996. John has served as patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, troop guide and patrol quartermaster. He was inducted into the Order of the Arrow in 1999. He is a Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say.

John has earned 23 merit badges, including the 12 Month Camper Award. He has attended H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation and went to the Philmont High Adventure Camp in New Mexico in 2000.

He is a senior at Lawrence High School, where he is a member of marching band, symphonic band and National Honor Society. He is a photographer for the school’s yearbook and The Budget.

John is the son of Bruce and Larisa Nightingale, Lawrence.

Andrew Avila, 17, Lawrence, has achieved Boy Scouting’s highest award of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle project, Andrew supervised the building and reconstruction of 11 picnic tables at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge.

Andrew was a member of Cub Scout Pack 3052 and later joined Troop 55. He has earned 35 merit badges, the 50 Miler Award and 12 Month Camper Award. He has served in various leadership positions and currently is senior patrol leader.

He is a Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, an honorary camping society at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation. He has achieved the rank of Brotherhood in Order of the Arrow.

Andrew has attended summer camp at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation for five consecutive years. He also has attended Philmont High Adventure Camp in New Mexico.

The Lawrence High School student is the son of Mark and Rita Avila, Lawrence.

Wolf Scouts from Cub Scout Pack 3072, chartered to Quail Run School, planted flowers April 27 at the Community Living Opportunities residence in Lawrence. Scouts who participated were Brandon Juracek, Alec Linot, Logan Bannister, Luke Peirce and Michael Rosa.

Cub Scout Pack 3059, chartered to the First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence, participated in a number of community service activities on April 26. Randy Walter, Matt Schrock, Nathan Stringer and Chance Barritt marched in the Earth Day Parade. They were accompanied by Sarah Stringer, of Brownie Troop 726, and adult leaders Gary Rexroad, Steve Walter and Tim Stringer.

The following Scouts participated in Clinton Lake Cleanup: Nathan Kappelman, Bryce Griffith, Phillip Gabler, Caelan Golledge, Adam Wangler, Barkley Edison, Ben Seybert, Ludwig Johanning and Ulrich Johanning. Adult leaders Bruce Johanning, Silke Johanning, Paul Gabler, Chris Golledge, Neil Wangler, Angela Seybert, Chris Griffith and Clay Kappelman also participated.

Members of Venture Crew 2052, chartered to St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, participated in the annual Venturing Odyssey April 25-27 at Camp Naish. While there, the girls participated in climbing a tower, skeet shooting, an Iron Chef Cooking Contest and Global Positioning Satellite training. Crew members who attended were Christy Howard, Clarissa Wagner, Kathy Lewis, Desiree Richmond, Alexis Tommer, Amanda Brixey and Saundra Harmon. They were accompanied by Kim Zinn, Ralena McCurdy, Cathy Howard, Rose Wagner, Pat Deaver, Marcia West, Robin Robertson and Karen Lewis.

Venturing Crew 2052 is an all-female crew recently chartered in the Lawrence area.

Boy Scout Troop 53, chartered to First Christian Church of Lawrence, went camping May 2-4 at the Falley Scout Reservation near Lake Perry. Scouts worked on rank advancement and collected specimens for the Reptile and Amphibian Study Merit Badge. Scouts who participated were John Chumbley, Joey Cunningham, Mitch Grant, Stephen May, Evan Mielke, Greg Muetz, Ryan Pennington, Andrew Schmidt, Zach Schmidt, Scott Shreders, Thomas Stanley, Chance Steele, Connor Stremel, Zak Stremel, Brian Teefey, Aaron Tilden, Ethan Yocum and Jordan Yulich. They were accompanied by Ron Spangler, Craig Grant, Eric Muetz and Mitch Yulich.
