Calvary Temple Assembly of God

Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace, will honor its moms on Mother’s Day during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday service.

The congregation also will honor its high school and college graduates. Gifts will be given to each graduate, and there will be a special time of prayer.

Central United Methodist Church

A special Mother’s Day worship service will be at 10:45 a.m. Sunday at Central United Methodist Church, 1501 Mass.

Loving Arms, a grief support group, meets at 7 p.m. Mondays.

Safe Landing, a divorce support group, meets at 7 p.m. Sundays.

Corpus Christi Catholic Church

The parish will have coffee and doughnuts following the Sunday Masses at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St.

Adoration will take place immediately following 7 a.m. Mass until noon Tuesday.

Adult choir rehearses at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

First Christian Church

The Swanson missionary family on Sunday will visit the congregation of First Christian Church, 1000 Ky.

Melissa Swanson grew up in First Christian Church and is the daughter of Paul and Virginia Penny.

Ed, Melissa and their four children have just finished a year of leave in the United States and have accepted an assignment in Ohio, Ill., with Wycliffe Bible Translators’ Jungle Jump Off.

This program brings a simulated, one-week jungle experience to potential missionaries. It is designed for teenage youth groups, families, college students, home-schooled students, youth pastors and retirees.

A presentation of the JJO program will be shown briefly during each Sunday service, with a larger presentation during Sunday school hour in the fellowship hall.

A homeowner will share the Habitat for Humanity experience at both services May 18.

The congregation will receive LOVE gifts June 1 and 8 for a new home, which will be built starting in September.

First United Methodist Church

The congregation of First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt., will honor its graduating high school seniors and their families with the annual senior banquet at 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Brady Hall.

Following dinner, the recipient of First UMC’s senior scholarship will be announced. The evening will end with a service of Holy Communion in the sanctuary.

Young adults going through finals are invited to take a break with other students at 6 p.m. Sunday on the church’s rooftop. Dinner will be served, and games will be played.

The sanctuary will be open for any that wish to spend time in prayer.

Kansas Zen Center

A two-day retreat with Chong Hae Sunim, abbot of the Providence Zen Center in Cumberland, R.I., will be held May 23-25 at the Kansas Zen Center, 1423 N.Y.

The retreat is open to anyone who has an interest in Zen Buddhism or Zen Buddhist practice.

This meditation retreat will feature: sitting and walking meditation; chanting practice; vegetarian meals in a traditional, four-bowl style; and kong-an interviews with Chong Hae Sunim.

The retreat begins at 6:30 p.m. May 23 and ends at noon May 25.

The fee for the retreat is $80 for members of the Kansas Zen Center and $110 for nonmembers.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

The closing Mass for religious education classes at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky., will be at 9:45 a.m. Sunday. Classes resume in the fall.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

The Vestry Team of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St., will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. today for a “Prayer and Visioning Meeting,” with a follow-up meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Children and youth of the church will celebrate their teachers, leaders and mothers during the 9 a.m. Sunday service and at a special reception afterward.

Theme of the day is “Jesus Came to Tell the Truth.”

Cinnamon rolls from Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt., will be on sale today when the Farmer’s Market opens for another season across the street from the church.

Coffee and other baked goods will be available.

The mothers of Trinity Episcopal will be honored Sunday with special flowers and prayers. Receptions in their honor will follow both worship services.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

A spiritual celebration will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

A traditional program, “In Honor of Parents,” will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by a wine-and-cheese fete in celebration of Mother’s Day from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Unity Church of Lawrence

The message at the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday services at Unity Church of Lawrence, 900 Madeline Lane, will be “Mother Divine.”

Unity will offer “A Course in Miracles” beginning at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

A time for meditation is held at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, followed at 7:45 p.m. by Wednesday Night Light, with music and a message.

The Unity Art Gallery will hold an artist reception for its new show, “The Beauty of Nature,” from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. May 17 at the church.

Artists Barbara Geyer, James Jagger, Karl Janssen, Jeff Lesterman, Priscilla McKinney, Susan Roberts, Brad Shaffner, Robbin Loomas, Celia Smith, Carolyn Young and Donnielle Kern will have their works featured.

Unity Church will present “A Bid for Unity,” a silent and live auction, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. June 20 in the Union Pacific Depot, 402 N. Second St.

The event will feature food, champagne, music and entertainment. The auction is being held to help Unity become a community center and provide greater access for related activities.

West Side Presbyterian Church

Six new books have been donated for the Women’s Association Reading List, and eight members were honored last Sunday for completing the reading assignment for last year — the largest in the whole Presbytery, at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1204 Kasold Drive.

The donated books offer worthwhile reading for the entire congregation and are not confined to “women only.”

Two of the books that have been donated are “Let’s Roll” by Lisa Beamer and “If You Want to Walk on the Water You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat” by John Ortberg.

New “Prayer Partners” have been assigned for May, as the congregation is in the process of writing a new mission statement for the church.

An all-church survey has been completed and will be incorporated into a report of the Mission Study Task Force to be given May 18.

The youth of the church will have a “lock-in” May 17, prior to hosting a potato bar luncheon after Sunday services May 18.
