David Travis became a Life Member of Lions Clubs International during a dinner given by his club, Lawrence River City Lions, on May 7. Life Membership is available to any Lion with 25 or more years of service to the organization and is traditionally bestowed upon members with exemplary service to the community.

Travis is a third-generation Lion who was instrumental in chartering the River City Lions Club in 1994 and served as the first president of the club. Before founding the River City Lions Club, Travis was a member and past president of Lawrence Lions Club as well as clubs in Iowa and Illinois.

Lawrence River City Lions elected officers for 2003-2004 during its April 16 meeting. The officers are Jeffrey King, president; Scott Rustenhoven, first vice president; Kathy Sanders, second vice president; Mary Margaret Rowen, secretary; Cheryl Travis, treasurer; Art Hadley, Lion Tamer; David Travis and Stacy Robarge, directors; and Lori Miller, membership director.

The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club’s May 5 game was directed by Virginia Seaver. The game was stratified and used the Mitchell movement.

The North-South winners were Jiambo Zhang and Harry Shaffer, followed by Sally Taylor and Shirlie Vaughn. Steven Goodman and Elizabeth Nice placed third.

The East-West winners were Virginia Seaver and Julia Brooks, followed by Christie Thomas and David Rhea. John Hickey and Jim Kelley placed third, followed by Jerry Sloan and Eldon Herd. Donna Johnson and Paul Heitzman came in fifth place. Nancy Trager and Ann Thompson placed first in B.

The Lawrence 299ers Duplicate Bridge Club met April 30 for its weekly competition. The game was stratified and attracted six tables. Don Brennaman directed the game.

Competing North-South, Chuck Hedges and Yvonne Hedges finished in first place. Harry Talley and Don Daugherty finished second in A and first in B. Harriet Olson and Artie Shaw placed third in A and second in B. Everard Hughes and Kriz Hughes took first in C.

Playing East-West, Dan Osman and Olivier Urruty claimed first place. Gary Joyce and Mary Joyce finished second. Dick Moore and Bobbie McCorkle took third in A and first in B and C.

The Jayhawk Sectional Bridge Tournament was May 2-4 at the Lawrence Holidome. Nearly 300 players competed in Knock-Out Teams, in Swiss Teams and in multiple flights of Stratified Pairs games.

Two Knock-Out Team competitions took place. Lawrence winners of the May 2 competition were James Gunn, Harry Shaffer, Kent McCullough and Larry Bodle, first place, B session; Patt Radford, John Hickey, Yvonne Hedges and Chuck Hedges, second place, B Session; Eldon Herd, Glenna Herd, Harry Talley and Don Daugherty, first place, C session; Shirley Vaughn, Sally Taylor, Virginia Eddy and Phyllis Brownlee, second place, C session; and Don Brennaman, Dan Osman, Lynn Hui and Olivier Urruty, third place, C session.

The Lawrence winners of the May 3 KO Team competition were Patt Radford, John Hickey, Yvonne Hedges and Chuck Hedges, first place, A session; James Gunn, Harry Shaffer, Clyde Romer and James Zhang, first place, B session; Eldon Herd, Glenna Herd, Rhonda Montgomery and Mike Montgomery, second place, C session.

Lawrence players who placed in the May 2 Stratified Pairs afternoon competition were Madelyn Jenks and Betty Collier, second place, A session; Donna Johnson and Paul Heitzman, third place, A session; Julia Brooks and Mildred Linley, fifth place, A session; Margarete Hartman and Barbara Figgins, third place, C session. Barbara McCorkle and Nita Scales placed third in the 99er pairs competition.
