School raises funds for American Red Cross

? Students and staff at Perry Middle School are raising money for the American Red Cross one penny at a time.

So far, the 240-student school has come up with $249.

Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade boys and girls teams are competing in a contest that will culminate at 2:30 p.m. May 19 with presentation of a check to Capital Area Chapter of the Red Cross.

Commerce Bank of Lawrence has been counting the coins and will unveil a ceremonial check at the event.

The school in Perry got involved in the project to show support for U.S. troops and their families as well as Iraqi children and their families.
