Dailey receives honor

While some Kansas lawmakers decry Dennis Dailey’s class on human sexuality, some of his students at Kansas University are honoring him for his teaching.

Dailey, above right, received the Del Shankel Teaching Excellence Award during the Jayhawk Scholar Recognition Banquet on Monday at the Kansas Union ballroom. Shankel is at left.

The award is given annually. All student athletes are invited to nominate a teacher for the award. A committee interviews the nominees, then votes for a winner.

Crime: Three suspects will face first-degree murder trial

San Jose, Costa Rica — After three days of deliberation, Golfito Judge Daniel Morán ruled Monday the three suspects charged with killing Kansas University student Shannon Martin would stand trial for first-degree murder.

No date has been set, but the trial is expected to begin before May 20, the last day of primary suspect Kattia Cruz’s extended preventive prison sentence.

Cruz, 27, will stand trial with Rafael Zumbado, 52, and Luis Alberto Castro, 32 — who also are known by their street names “Coco” and “Caballo.”

The ruling came slightly less than a week after Golfito prosecutor Erick Mart–nez presented the judge with evidence supporting the murder charges.

Martin, a KU exchange student who studied for a semester in Golfito, was stabbed to death May 13, 2001.
