Community: Local groups perform to benefit Lawrence schools

Four acts will sing in harmony for benefit of student musicians in the Lawrence public school district.

The Get Up Kids, Approach, DJnotaDJ and The Casket Lottery will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday at Liberty Hall, 642 Mass., to raise money for the district’s music program.

The show opens with Casket Lottery, followed by Approach. TGUK will then go on with DJnotaDJ closing out the night. The performing groups were chosen by an online poll at lawrence.com.

Tickets are $15 for the all-ages show. The event is sponsored by lawrence.com and Black Lodge Recording in Eudora. For information, call 749-1972.

Kansas University: Dole Institute seeks photos of WWII vets

The Dole Institute of Politics at Kansas University is seeking photos of World War II veterans from Kansas to include in a 35-foot-tall Memory Wall to be installed in the institute’s new building on KU’s West Campus.

The wall will stand beside a tall stained-glass American flag and two 10-foot beams from the World Trade Center.

Pictures may be black and white or color, of any size. To donate, send photos and identifying information to the institute, 704 W. 12th St., Lawrence 66044. Scanned photos may be sent in JPG format to lpritchard@ku.edu.

Richard Norton Smith, director of the Dole Institute, said he would like to have the photos by May 15 to have the wall completed by the dedication ceremonies, which are July 20-22.

Wakarusa Township: Fire department hires new chief, seeks recruits

Christopher Moore began his new position as Wakarusa Fire Department Chief on May 1.

The department is also seeking applicants for Firefighter I class by the Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute in June. It will also accept applications for its residency program at Department Station 2. Participants in the residency program must have a minimum requirement of Firefighter I certification.

Schools: LHS, FSHS plan Project Grad for seniors

Graduating seniors at Lawrence and Free State high schools have an all-nighter planned for May 25.

Project Graduation 2003, the annual alcohol- and drug-free celebration, will run from 11 p.m. May 25 to 4 a.m. May 26 at The Granada, 1020 Mass. Sign-up information is available at the high schools.

There will be music, games and prizes. Festivities culminate with a drawing for a used car donated by Jack Ellena Honda. Graduates must be present to win.

Seniors will receive commemorative T-shirts, compliments of Gene Fritzel Construction, Stephens Real Estate and University National Bank. The Journal-World and DCCCA are donating $500 scholarships.

Local eateries will furnish refreshments to fuel the celebrating seniors into the early morning hours.
