KU architecture school acquires book collection

The Kansas University School of Architecture celebrated a new book collection with a reception Friday afternoon.

The 80-piece Cassandra Black Memorial Collection includes monographs of architects, books on architectural theory and books about specific historical periods.

It was purchased with a $3,000 donation made by the family of Cassandra Black, an architecture student from Columbia, Mo., who was killed in May 2002 in a car accident on her way home from Lawrence.

Play explores accepting those with disabilities

De Soto High School will perform the Jellybean Conspiracy’s “Bless Cricket, Crest Toothpaste and Tommy Tune” in the school’s Little Theater at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. performance Saturday.

The play follows a girl whose sister has Down syndrome as she learns to accept and value her sister’s differences. Proceeds from the show benefit the Jellybean Conspiracy, a nonprofit organization that works to increase public awareness and acceptance of people with disabilities.

State announces awards for nursing homes

The Kansas Department on Aging will honor outstanding nursing homes with the new PEAK initiative, Promoting Excellent Alternatives in Kansas Nursing Homes.

Kansas residents may recommend homes for awards in one or more of the following categories: returning control to and creating options for residents, enhancing front-line staff’s responsiveness to residents, creating a home environment, or enhancing community involvement.

To nominate a home, send a written request to Patsy Samson at the Department on Aging, 503 S. Kansas, Topeka 66605, by fax at (785) 296-0256, or e-mail at Patsys@aging.state.ks.us. Include the home’s name, address and a brief description of the reason for the nomination. Nominations must be received by May 12.

LHS plans after-prom, late-night ‘safe’ party

Lion’s Pride Parents will put on an after-prom party from 1 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. May 10 at Lawrence High School, 1901 La. The party will provide prom attendees with a safe place to go after the dance.

The party will include music, games, videos and snacks. Attendance costs are included in the price of a prom ticket. Tickets to attend just the after-prom are $3 and may be purchased at the school until May 10 or at the party.

Baker paper wins awards

The staff of the Baker Orange, the student newspaper at Baker University, won awards for 54 individual entries as well as top statewide honors in the Kansas Associated Collegiate Press annual contest. Awards were announced at a conference April 13-14 in Wichita.

The Orange won its fourth consecutive All-Kansas Award, giving it the highest ranking of four-year, private colleges and universities in Kansas. Kristen Callaway, El Dorado junior, was named Journalist of the Year for all four-year college newspapers, and the Orange’s online site placed third in overall competition.

Individual awards included James Gillispie, Baldwin junior, honorable mention in sports feature writing; Claire Kueffer, Baldwin sophomore, second place in news writing and first place in series writing; Ashley Kraus, Eudora sophomore, third place in feature photography, first place in news photography, honorable mention in sports photography and third place in photo essay; Kristin Bock, Lawrence sophomore, first place, second place and two honorable mentions in sports column writing; and Patrick Lattin, Lawrence sophomore, third place in headline writing and second and third place in series writing.

Baker offers nursing camp to high schoolers

Baker University will offer high school juniors and seniors a chance to learn more about a nursing career during a day camp this month in Topeka.

The camp, May 28-30, will be at Baker’s campus at Stormont-Vail HealthCare in Topeka.

Students will learn about the anatomy of the heart, discuss career options and get hands-on experience measuring blood pressure, calculating target heart rates and listening to heart and lung sounds. Students also can earn certification in CPR.

The camp costs $75 per person, or $100 with the CPR certification. To register, call (888) 866-4242, ext. 5850.

Seniors to compete in sporting events

The Salina Parks and Recreation Department invites Kansas seniors to participate in the 2003 Salina Senior Games June 20-21.

Events will include basketball three-point shot and free throw, billiards, bowling, cycling, golf, horseshoes, race walk, racquetball, road race, shuffleboard, swimming, table tennis, tennis and track and field events. Participants must be older than 50 by Dec. 31, 2003. Competition will be divided by gender and age group.
