Texas high school power forward Joseph Jones is the top college prospect scheduled to play in the 17-and-under Jayhawk Invitational Basketball Tournament tonight through Sunday at Kansas University’s Allen Fieldhouse and Horejsi Center.

Jones, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound junior from Normangee, Texas — reportedly being recruited by KU, North Carolina, Arizona, Texas and others — will be joined by 6-4 juniors Derrick Roberts and Chamberlain Oguchi on Houston Select AAU.

The Texas team, one of 20 entered in the tournament, will open at 10:10 tonight against KC 76ers at Horejsi Center, and play again at 4:30 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse. The tourney semifinals are 11:30 a.m. Sunday, with the finals at 2 p.m, all at Allen.

“Jones has exploded on the scene the past month,” said Eric Bossi, recruiting analyst from prepstars.com. “He is a big bruiser who is not yet very refined, but is getting better around the bucket and will bowl people over.”

One other KU prospect, 6-5 Bryce Taylor of Encino, Calif., told rivals.com analyst Shay Wildeboor late Thursday night he would not be attending with his California Pump and Run teammates. That squad, which will play at 9 tonight at Horejsi and again at 11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse, is left with 6-9 junior Lorenzo Mata, plus sophomores Brian Harvey (6-6) and Kashif Watson (6-2).

“Mata is aggressive around the basket. He blocks a lot of shots and is very active,” Bossi said. “Kashif is a sophomore whose brother plays at Tennessee. He handles the ball, gets into the lane and can shoot it. When you see Harvey, you’ll never imagine he’s a sophomore. He’s a good athlete and jump shooter.”

Enrico Tucker, a 5-11 point guard from San Diego, will play for California Double Pump at 10:10 tonight at Horejsi, and again at 4:30 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. Saturday at Allen.

“You see a 5-11 kid putting his head on the rim in warmups and you notice,” Bossi said. “I saw him last week (in Las Vegas tournament) and he was doing 360 windmill dunks.”

Justin Wilkerson, a 6-8 sophomore who has committed to Texas Tech, will play for Texas Top Prospects in games at 10:10 tonight at Allen, 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Horejsi and 7 p.m. Saturday at Allen.

“He likes to face up and shoot from 12 to 15 feet,” Bossi said. “(Tech coach) Bobby Knight always has a guy like that, fundamentally sound, skilled with a good feel for the game.”

Hector Hernandez, a 6-9 junior forward, will play for Colorado Pump and Run at 10:10 tonight at Allen and 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Horejsi and 7 p.m. Saturday at Allen.

“He is comfortable dribbling on the perimeter, but will never be a wing because of his size,” Bossi said. “He’s going to end up a top 100 player.”

Wichita State signee Kurt Bangle, a 6-8 forward from Garden City, will join Free State High’s Dain Dillingham on KC Pump and Run, which plays at 9 tonight at Allen, 10:15 a.m. Saturday at Horejsi and 2 p.m. Saturday at Allen.

The KC Keys, who play at 9 tonight at Horejsi and again at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Allen and 7 p.m. Saturday at Horejsi, are led by Marcus Walker, a 5-11 guard from KC O’Hara. He’s a teammate of KU football recruit Scott Remund, a 6-5 power forward in basketball and tight end in football.

College coaches cannot attend because the state of Kansas does not sanction such events during the school year.

• Haase nets job on UNC bench: New North Carolina coach Roy Williams said Thursday former Jayhawk Jerod Haase would join Steve Robinson and Joe Holladay as full-time assistants on his UNC staff. A UNC administrative assistant spot awaits former KU assistant Ben Miller if he’s not added to Bill Self’s coaching staff at KU.

“I’ve given Ben and Bill Self a little more time to make their decisions on the staff there,” Williams said, noting he would consider former Carolina guard Phil Ford for a spot if Miller remains at KU.

“I wanted someone to stay there for my (KU) players. That was important. If I had brought everybody with me the first day, my players would have been out there in the middle of the Sahara Desert, not having anybody to talk to,” Williams said. “And Ben has a doctoral degree in sports psychology, so he was the best equipped to handle all that. When I did bring Jerod and C.B. (McGrath) on, Bill wanted to talk to him (Miller), and that time is not up yet.”

Williams said Haase would have been his third assistant next season even if he’d stayed at Kansas.

“At Kansas last fall, I made a decision that the third spot, I was going to rotate,” said Williams, who rotated the duties of Robinson, Jerry Green and Kevin Stallings when he first took over at KU 15 years ago.

“It was something that I had done before and was going to do again, and I made that promise to Jerod, and when I came to North Carolina, I was going to stick with that promise.”

• A Boschee brother promoted: Mike Boschee, the brother of former KU guard Jeff Boschee, has been named head men’s basketball coach at NCAA Div. III Central College in Pella, Iowa. Mike Boschee was an assistant at Gustavus Adolphus in Minnesota for 11 years.
