Free State throttles SM West at dual

Free State High’s tennis team torched Shawnee Mission West, 9-0, Thursday in dual play.

The Firebirds convincingly won all six singles and three doubles matches — the highest number of points any Viking could muster was four — as Free State (6-0-2) remained perfect in dual play this season.

“The margin of defeat in the matches is the most disappointing thing,” SM West coach Greg Schieszer said. “You can’t always tell how close a match was by the score, but I think the score was pretty indicative of the matches.”

The Vikings (2-6-1) have yet to win a dual match at Free State.

“We don’t play well on green courts with gray trim,” Schieszer said with a chuckle. “It must be the color of the courts.”

Free State’s strength is experience — five of the six players on the Firebirds’ roster are seniors. The only non-senior is junior Bryan Maygers.

“Since we’re seniors, it just gives more confidence,” Eyad Safadi said. “We have a lot of experience.”

Safadi won his singles match against John Leonard, 8-1, after teaming with senior Matt Schwabauer in doubles to upend Jason Lee and Ted Kim, 8-3. The win upped the tandem’s overall record to 12-1.

Schwabauer also won his singles match, 8-2, over Kim.

“This year we expect to do well because of our experience,” Schwabauer said.

Wins are fine, but the Firebirds want more.

“That’s definitely our No. 1 goal — to go to state,” Schwabauer said. “We had the talent to go last year, we just choked at regionals.”

FSHS coach Jon Renberger said he wasn’t worried about state, and he hoped his players would agree.

“I know in the back of their minds they have those hopes and dreams,” Renberger said. “I’d rather just take it one game at a time.”

Free State plays Saturday in the Gardner-Edgerton Invitational.
