Royals blank Rockies

? Jeremy Affeldt pitched two-hit ball for six innings, leading the Kansas City Royals over the Colorado Rockies, 5-0, Friday night.

Brent Mayne had two hits and two RBIs for the Royals. Dee Brown doubled, drove in a run and scored twice.

Affeldt, making his final start of the spring before his regular-season debut against the Chicago White Sox April 2, did not allow a hit until Bobby Estalella’s single in the fifth inning. Kansas City’s third pick in the 1997 draft, Affeldt went 3-4 with a 4.64 ERA in 34 games in 2002.

“I want to be a big-time starter, and to do that I have to show consistency,” Affeldt said.

Colorado starter Aaron Cook allowed two runs — one earned — on four hits in 52¼3 innings, striking out four. He is scheduled to face the Astros Wednesday in Houston.

“This is Aaron Cook’s first spring training, and he’s done nothing but improve,” Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. “He’s going to get the ball the second game of the season for us, so that shows how highly we think of him.”

Notes: The Royals finalized their opening-day roster, reassigning RHP James Baldwin and C Juan Brito to minor league camp. Kansas City also purchased the contract of INF Mendy Lopez and C Mike DiFelice from Triple-A Omaha.
