Doty services

Mrs. Doty died Monday, March 10, 2003, at her home.

She was born July 28, 1941, in Bingham, Utah, the daughter of Earl and Dorothy (Anderson) House. She spent most of her childhood in Tooele, Utah, and graduated from the University of Utah in 1963 with a bachelor of arts degree in drawing and painting. She moved to Berkeley, Calif., in the mid-1960s.

Mrs. Doty co-founded the Alacosta Developmental Center in Berkeley in the 1970s. She taught at San Francisco State University and University of California at Irvine, where she earned her master’s in fine arts. She began at Kansas University as an English professor in 1986. She wrote four novels, “A Day Late,” “Fly Away Home,” “What She Told Him” and “Whisper.” She also had criticisms and reviews appear in The Paris Review and The Los Angeles Times. She served as fiction/nonfiction director of Squaw Valley Writer’s Conference for 20 years.

She married William Doty. They later divorced. He survives of Berkeley.

Other survivors include a son, Stuart Doty, Vallejo, Calif.; a daughter, Margaret Doty, Oakland, Calif.; her mother, Peoria, Ariz., and a sister, Janet House, Tooele, Utah.
