1983 rapist up for parole

A Lawrence man convicted 20 years ago in attacks on female Kansas University students is up for parole in April.

It was in April 1983 that Robert Earl Davis, now 36, pleaded no contest to aggravated battery, rape and aggravated assault. The charges stemmed from the following incidents: a knifepoint robbery Jan. 27, 1983; a rape, sodomy and robbery Jan. 30, 1983; and an assault Feb. 7, 1983.

The victims were not able to identify their attacker because he wore a ski mask. Police, however, said Davis, who was 16 at the time, admitted committing the crimes shortly after he was taken into custody.

Davis also initially faced charges of aggravated robbery and sodomy, but they were dropped in return for the plea.

Davis was sentenced to five to 20 years in prison on the robbery and rape convictions and two to five years for the assault conviction by Douglas County Judge Ralph King. The sentences were ordered to be served consecutively.

The Kansas Parole Board plans public comment sessions about possible parole for Davis and others. Hearings will be at:
