Old home town – 25, 40 and 100 years ago today

IN 1978 – The Douglas County Commission decided to fire Public Works director Dean Sanderson effective June 1 due to dissatisfaction with his job performance. The commissioners explained that health problems had weakened Sanderson’s ability to fully fulfill the duties of his job.

Jerry Nossaman, 39-year-old dentist, was announced as president-elect of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce for 1978-79.

IN 1963 – Kansas University chancellor Clarke Wescoe was the featured speaker for the kickoff of the popular Greek Week on the campus.

The compromise Wichita University bill in the Kansas Legislature appeared to have a green light from the Kansas House. It appeared the municipal school would be joining the state regents system in the near future although opponents still were vocal and sometimes derisive about the planned move.

IN 1903 – From the Lawrence Daily World of March 22, 1903: “It is hard to get up interest in the city election. The candidates themselves are not excited much and they have failed to excite others. . . . The city ought not to allow these telephone and telegraph posts placed on the main street. They are unsightly and can just as well be placed in the alleys. . . . More rural routes are being established in Kansas. what was an experiment five years ago has become a settled policy now. Douglas County is practically covered with rural routes.”
