Journal-World seeking anniversary dates

In 2004, Lawrence will celebrate its 150th birthday, the Lawrence Public Library will turn 100, and the Lied Center will begin its 10th year — the 100th year of its concert series.

The Journal-World is trying to track down other organizations that will be celebrating significant anniversaries next year.

Indian Arts Show lands at Arts Center

The Lawrence Indian Arts Show will be based this year at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

Confusion about the future of the show has swirled since its former home, Kansas University’s Museum of Anthropology, closed due to budget cuts, said Maria Martin, the show’s longtime organizer.

The opening reception for the juried exhibition will be Sept. 12 at the Arts Center, where the exhibition will remain on display through Oct. 11.

Other event mainstays will continue. The two-day Haskell Indian Art Market will be Sept. 13-14 at Haskell Indian Nations University; and the Spencer Museum of Art will show contemporary American Indian art from its permanent collection.

Peking Opera cancels Lied Center show

The Peking Opera, which was scheduled for performance March 29 at the Lied Center, has been canceled.

Lied Center officials learned last week from the booking agent for the production’s American tour that the U.S. Consul in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, denied the opera’s visa applications.

It wasn’t immediately known whether escalating world tensions played a role in the denial, said Karen Christilles, associate director of the Lied Center. This is the first time in the concert hall’s 10-year history that a performance has been canceled because a visiting artist couldn’t get a visa, she said.

Ticket holders should receive notification of the cancellation by mail. They will be able to receive a refund, exchange tickets for another event or make a tax-deductible gift to the Lied Center. The ticket office was closed last week for spring break but will reopen Monday.
