KU baseball tops ORU
TULSA, OKLA. ? Kansas University’s baseball team rebounded from Saturday’s loss to Oral Roberts by defeating the Golden Eagles, 9-2, Sunday and winning the three-game series.
ORU, which won Saturday’s game, 7-6, grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when Scott Campbell singled to drive in Grant Plumley from second base.
No. 17 KU (18-6) answered in the top of the second when senior designated hitter Kevin Wheeler blasted the first pitch of the inning over the left-field wall. Wheeler’s team-leading fifth home run ignited a four-run inning, which was aided by two ORU fielding errors.
KU’s three-run third inning was highlighted by a home run from sophomore third baseman Travis Metcalf, his fourth of the season.
After Oral Roberts put a run up in the bottom of the third inning, Wheeler answered again in the top of the fifth with an RBI double off the left-field wall.
Kansas added its final run in the seventh, when Ritchie Price singled and scored on Matt Tribble’s sacrifice fly.
Junior Ryan Knippschild (5-1) worked his second consecutive complete game. The left-hander allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out five.
Dennis Bigley (1-2) took the loss for ORU (6-9).
Ryan Baty led KU with three hits.
Kansas will play Southwest Missouri State at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Springfield, Mo.
