Charges filed against beating suspects include attempted first-degree murder

Four men and a woman, all from Emporia, were charged Wednesday afternoon in Douglas County District Court in connection with the beating, kidnapping and robbery of a Mayetta man who was found unconscious Monday morning at Riverfront Park just north of Lawrence.

Three of the men were charged with attempted first-degree murder and all five people arrested were charged with kidnapping.

Police said that 21-year-old Josh Greemore was the victim of a robbery.

“He was then beaten, bound, stabbed and left for dead where he was found by a passing motorist,” said Sgt. Mike Pattrick, Lawrence Police spokesman.

Greemore, who was found about 6:40 a.m. Monday on a road adjacent to Riverfront Park, was listed in good condition Wednesday afternoon at a Kansas City-area hospital.

Pattrick said evidence and weapons consistent with the injuries sustained by Greemore have been recovered.

The following are the Emporia people and the charges filed against them Wednesday:

  • Jeremy Harris, 24, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and felony theft. He is being held on $500,000 bond.
  • James Keezer, 20, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery. His bond was set at $500,000.
  • Scott Staggs, 33, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery. His bond was set at $500,000.
  • Leslie Howe, 22, was charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and felony theft. His bond was set at $300,000.
  • Sara Bruce, 19, was charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery. Her bond was set at $300,000.

District Judge Peggy Kittel said she set the bonds at those levels because of the nature and severity of the charges and the suspects’ lack of ties to the Lawrence community

Howe and Harris were captured in Greenwood County after an overnight search that involved searchers combing through Greenwood and Elk counties in southeast Kansas.

Keezer, Staggs and Bruce were found in a rural Leavenworth County home, Lawrence police said.
