KU’s hopes rest in Big 12 tourney

? Marian Washington has to be wondering which of her Kansas University women’s basketball teams will show up for today’s rubber match with Iowa State in the first round of the Big 12 Conference tournament.

Will it be the Jayhawks who in January took the Cyclones down to the wire before bowing, 72-70, on Lindsey Wilson’s free throws with seconds remaining at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa?

Or will it be the Jayhawks who just last Wednesday offered little resistance in bowing to the Cyclones, 69-44, in the regular-season finale in Allen Fieldhouse?

Tipoff will be at noon today at Reunion Arena in Dallas. The game will be broadcast on the Jayhawk Network, including KLWN 1320.

Iowa State is the No. 8 seed in the tourney — the Cyclones’ lowest seed since the Big 12 was formed — while Kansas is No. 9.

Two years ago, the Jayhawks were also seeded ninth and knocked off No. 8 seed Oklahoma State, 66-56, before bowing to eventual champion Oklahoma in the quarterfinals, 80-61.

Kansas also has a history of playing well in the first round of the league tourney. Last year, as the No. 12 seed, the Jayhawks took No. 5 seed Texas down to the nub before bowing, 62-61.

Today’s KU-ISU winner will meet league champion and No. 1 seed Texas at noon Wednesday at Reunion Arena.

Kansas University coach Marian Washington, right, demonstrates a play for Crystal Kemp. KU practiced Monday in Dallas for the Big 12 Conference tournament.

With three newcomers in its starting lineup, KU has bounced back from last year’s 5-25 season — the worst in Washington’s Mount Oread tenure — to double last year’s win total (10-17).

Nevertheless, the Jayhawks have struggled with turnovers — they’re last in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio — and have been overwhelmed by good three-point shooting teams.

Foes are shooting 40.3 from three-point range against the Jayhawks. By far, that’s the worst three-point field goal defense percentage in the league while shooting only 30.7 percent from beyond the arc.

Opponents have nearly 160 more three-point goals than the Jayhawks have been able to muster.

When: Noon today. Where: Reunion Arena, Dallas. Radio: Jayhawk Network, including KLWN 1320. Records: Ninth-seeded Kansas University (10-17, 3-13, Big 12 Conference) vs. eighth-seeded Iowa State (12-15, 7-9).

Tamara Ransburg, a 6-foot-4 freshman, leads Kansas in scoring (10.9) and rebounding (7.9). She is also among the league leaders in blocked shots with 64. However, Ransburg is also among the league leaders in turnovers with 109 and has battled foul trouble most of the season.
