Stamp to honor wildlife refuge

Florida is more than Disney World, the Cape Canaveral Space Center, the fun and frivolity of South Beach, the Daytona auto races, Busch Gardens, Universal Studios, the Everglades and other vacation sites.

There’s also Pelican Island — the last breeding ground for brown pelicans along the entire east coast of Florida, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Established March 14, 1903, by executive order of President Theodore Roosevelt, Pelican Island Wildlife Refuge was the first official wildlife refuge in the United States.

In recognition of that occasion, the U.S. Postal Service will issue a new 47-cent commemorative stamp to celebrate the centennial and also the beginning of the National Wildlife Refuge system.

The new stamp features a photo by James Brandt of the famed pelican in its habitat. Text along the bottom of the stamp reads “Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge 1903-2003.”

The Stamp Fulfillment Services of the USPS offers first-day covers marked with the official first day of issue cancellation of March 14. Call toll free (800)-STAMP-24. Current U.S. stamps and philatelic products, as well as a free USA Philatelic catalog, also are available.
