Crop prediction

To the editor:

Friday, Feb. 21, Paul Harvey, Good Morning, America! Good news for American farmers, the 2003 corn crop will be a record 9 billion bushels.

The same day, the Lawrence Journal-World wrote that agriculture department chief economist Keith Collins said corn production was expected to be a record 10.3 billion bushels for 2003, up from 9 billion bushels in 2002; also wheat and beans were projected higher. Will crop prices drop? They’re already at a record low. Drought, hot summer, long time from planting to the bin. How do they predict the future?
