Bonnies fans gather

? Robert Cheeks got more than he expected when he walked into the Reilly Center Saturday.

Cheeks, a fifth-year senior forward on the St. Bonaventure basketball team, should have been playing his final home game against No. 21 Dayton.

Instead, when he walked in to eat lunch and relax at the basketball court with his 3-year-old son, Isiah, he found about 300 Bonnies fans gathered to show support for the basketball program.

“It’s kind of hard to watch TV because everybody’s putting down Bonaventure,” Cheeks said. “Right now, with all the people here, I’m really overwhelmed and surprised. I really know why I chose Bonaventure.”

The Atlantic 10 stripped the Bonnies of six conference victories Monday and barred them from the league’s postseason play after they were cited for using center Jamil Terrell, who failed to meet NCAA junior-college transfer guidelines. The next day, the school announced the players would boycott their final two games.

The school’s board of trustees plans to meet in an emergency session today in Buffalo, ahead of its scheduled March 21 meeting. They could discuss the troubled basketball program and how school officials handled the situation.
