New England trio to play at KU

The Pegis Trio will perform music by Beethoven, Ives and Dvorak at a 7:30 p.m. Friday recital.

The concert will be at Kansas University’s Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall.

The trio consists of Monica Pegis, violin; Jacques Lee Wood, cello; and Eliko Akahori, piano — all of whom are graduates of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

The trio will perform Beethoven’s Trio in C Minor, Op. 1, No. 3; Ives’ Trio for Violin, Cello, and Piano; and Dvorak’s Dumky Trio, Op. 90.

Baker professor wins arts, disabilities award

Dee Hansen, Lawrence resident and Baker University associate professor of music education, has been selected to receive one of two statewide awards for Distinguished Service of the Year in Arts and Disabilities for 2002.

The awards will be presented by Accessible Arts Inc. in conjunction with the Kansas State Board of Education during a 3:30 p.m. Wednesday ceremony at the board of education meeting at the Kansas State School for the Blind, 1100 State Ave., Kansas City, Kan.

The other distinguished service award winner is Connie Burket, director of Kansas Alliance for Arts Education, Salina. Barbara Adams, an art teacher at Kansas School for the Deaf, Olathe, will receive the award for Kansas Educator of the Year in Arts and Disabilities.

Hansen and Burket have been strong advocates for inclusive learning in arts education and programming. Hansen was, until recently, the fine arts consultant for the Kansas State Department of Education. She is chairwoman of the Kansas Citizens for the Arts, a statewide grass-roots arts advocacy organization.

Youth Symphony to play recognition concert

The Lawrence Youth Symphony will perform at 2 p.m. at Central Junior High, 1400 Mass.

Admission is free.

Youth Symphony members are orchestra and band students in grades 7-10. The 10th graders will be given special recognition at the concert.

Program highlights include: Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance, No. 8, “Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity” by Holst and the Finale from Tschaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2.

The orchestra is directed by Lynn Basow. She is assisted by Sondra Mosley and Pat Transue.

Adult actors needed for summer theater

Adult actors are needed for Kansas University Summer Theatre’s 50th anniversary production of William Inge’s “Picnic,” which will be directed by Jack Wright, professor of theater and film.

Performances will be July 11-12 and 18-20, and Sept. 5-7.

Four to six community actors, ages 40 to 60, are needed for the nonpaying roles of Flo Owens, Madge’s mother; Helen Potts, the neighbor; and Kristine Shownwaler and Irma Kronkite, both teachers.

“Picnic” rehearsals will be held 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. June 2-July 10. Actors can sign up for an audition time from noon to 4 p.m. Monday in the Murphy Hall lobby or by calling The University Theatre at 864-3381.

Open call auditions will be from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday in 341 Murphy Hall. Auditioners are strongly encouraged to prepare memorized audition material, which should not exceed two minutes. Callbacks will be held 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday and 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Honor society sponsors worldly photo contest

The KU chapter of Phi Beta Delta, an honor society for international scholars, is sponsoring an international photography contest called “Picture the World.” KU students, alumni, and current or retired faculty and staff who have taken pictures while outside the United States are eligible to enter.

Photos will be judged by division (students, faculty/staff and alumni) in the categories of people, places and cultural traces. The photos have to be taken outside of the United States and captured on film. Digital photos will not be accepted.

Winning entries will be displayed April 7-25 at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt. Top place winners will be featured in an on-campus exhibit in the Art and Design Building in late fall. Image Works, 711 W. 23rd St., is donating a camera to be awarded for Best of Show.

Entry deadline is 5 p.m. Friday in the Office of International Programs, 300 Strong Hall. Entry forms and contest rules are available at www.international.ku.edu. Jurors for the contest will be photographers from the community.

KC Celtic band to play at La Tasca

The Kelihans, a Kansas City-based Irish band, will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight March 12 at La Tasca, 943 Mass.

The group is composed of musicians from various Kansas City bands who played together three years ago on St. Patrick’s Day and enjoyed it so much they formed a band that now performs weekly in Kansas City.

Members include Jack Boyd, guitar and accordion, formerly of Lawrence; Kyle Laval, guitar; Adam Hale, bass; John Cutler, mandolin; Dana Catlett, violin; and Bill Guilfoyle, drums.

The group plays traditional Irish music rocked up in the spirit of the Pogues.
