Calvary Temple Assembly of God

An all-church and friends supper will be held at 6:30 p.m. March 16 at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace.

Participants are asked to bring a covered dish. Preaching from the Scriptures will follow the meal.

The Couriers Trio will sing during the 6:30 p.m. service March 23. The group has recorded 58 albums and is regarded as one of the world’s top gospel singing groups.

Central United Methodist Church

Loving Arms, a Christian support group for those who have cancer and their families, will meet at 7 p.m. every Monday, starting next week.

Corpus Christi Catholic Church

Lenten prayer opportunities will be observed with Stations of the Cross at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and evening prayer at 4:30 p.m. Sundays at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St.

A rosary prayer group has been formed for those interested in praying for Catholics who find themselves alienated from the church. The group meets at 7 p.m. Tuesdays during Lent at the church.

Lenten prayer eggs have been placed in the gathering space of the church. Parishioners are asked to take an egg and pray for the person listed on it during Lent.

A St. Patrick’s Day party with Celtic music will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. March 16 in the gym of Lawrence Catholic School-St. John campus, 1208 Ky.

There is a $10 suggested donation, with proceeds going to the Lawrence Open Shelter. Families are welcome to attend.

First United Methodist Church

The children of First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt., are invited to participate in a special lenten workshop at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the fellowship hall.

Children in first through sixth grades will rotate through four stations: dyeing Easter eggs; cooking in the kitchen; making Resurrection eggs and crafts. Preschool and toddlers will decorate eggs and make Resurrection cookies.

Wednesdays in Lent continues next week with supper from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; lenten studies from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; and worship at 7:30 p.m.

Communion will be served at this week’s worship service, which will focus on prayer.

Martha and Mary’s Way

A special lenten worship series, sponsored by Martha and Mary’s Way, will be held at noon Wednesdays at Plymouth Congregational Church Chapel, 925 Vt.

Each of the lenten worship services will be designed and led by a Lawrence clergywoman. A special offering will be taken to support a Lawrence-area community service.

Martha and Mary’s Way is sponsoring another series called “Religions of the World: Women’s Perspective from Within,” which will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

The speaker will be Gopi Sandal on “Bhakti Yoga: Yoga of Devotion.”

Other religions of the world will be explored on subsequent Thursday evenings at the library.

Plymouth Congregational Church

A forum on the school bond issue will be held at 10:45 a.m. Sunday in the Mayflower Room of Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

All are welcome to come and hear Randy Weseman, superintendent of Lawrence public schools, speak on this issue.

There will be comments from both sides, followed by a question-and-answer session.

The meeting will be held during the regular coffee hour.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

The Rev. Darrel Proffitt, senior pastor, will preach his message, “Prayer Can Change Your Life,” at the 7:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. services Sunday at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

The church’s lenten program, “Journey Towards Easter,” begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday with fellowship, supper, reflection and worship.

Trinity Episcopal Church

The Rev. William Smalley, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas, on Sunday will visit Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt.

Smalley will preach and celebrate at both the 8 a.m. and the 10:30 a.m. services. He will also lead the adult forum class in a discussion of the mission of the church at 9:30 a.m. in the parish hall.

This will be the last visit Smalley will make to Trinity parish before his retirement this summer. There will be receptions in his honor after both services.

Lenten book studies at Trinity include: “On Our Own Terms,” videos and discussions on Christian death, led by Deborah Burns at 7 p.m. Mondays; The Book of Galatians Bible study, led by the Rev. Jonathon Jensen from 5:10 p.m. to 5:55 p.m. Wednesdays; and “The Return of the Prodigal,” a book discussion on Henri Nouwen’s work, led by Carolyn Graham at 10 a.m. Fridays.

Trinity Lutheran Church

The theme at the center of the lenten observance at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H., is “Pauses Along the Trail.”

Taking the time of Lent as a journey, church members will gather Wednesdays from 5:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. for Holden evening prayer. Choir members will lead meditations on stories behind some of the most treasured hymns.

The Rev. Gary Teske, senior pastor, will lead a series of forums called “The Journey from a Pastoral to a Program Church.” These forums will meet from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Sundays, starting this weekend, until April 13.

First Communion training also begins this month with Teske leading a two-session training during Lent.

Trinity Social Concerns meets at 12:15 p.m. Sunday with Tami Clark, director of the Community Drop-in Center, as guest speaker.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

A spiritual celebration, “The Meaning of Lent for Unitarian Universalists,” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

Kansas University Professor Emeritus Ted Johnson will present a program, “The Orientation and Iconography of the Buildings on the Eastern Brow of Mt. Oread,” from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

There will be a time for coffee and fellowship from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Unity Church of Lawrence

The Rev. Bonny Golbert-Ashe of Newark, Conn., will be guest speaker at the 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday services at Unity Church of Lawrence, 901 Madeline Lane.

Her talk is based on “The Isaiah Effect,” by Gregg Braden.

Unity will hold a new member orientation March 16.

West Side Presbyterian Church

“The Preparation,” based on the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness from Mark 1:9, will be the sermon topic for the first Sunday in Lent by the Rev. Jay Gideon, interim pastor of West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

The congregation will gather at 5:30 p.m. Sunday for the first in the series of lenten studies by James A. Harnish, “Dying to Live,” which explores why Jesus died on the cross.

This adult lenten study will continue each Sunday evening through Holy Week.
