Texas powers past KC

? Alex Rodriguez and Juan Gonzalez hit back-to-back homers and the Texas Rangers overcame another poor outing by Chan Ho Park to beat the Kansas City Royals, 11-8, Thursday.

Rodriguez drove in five runs, including an RBI groundout in the first and his first spring homer, a three-run shot in the third. Gonzalez followed with his first homer to cap a four-run inning that tied the game at 5.

Park gave up six runs on four hits over 22/3 innings. In his first spring start four days earlier, the right-hander allowed five runs on six hits in two innings against Milwaukee.

“No one is happy to give up so many runs, but it’s little mistakes,” Park said. “It’s good I have spring training.”

Park hit the first two Kansas City batters, including leadoff hitter Carlos Febles, who played for the first time since being hit on the hand by a pitch Monday. Both Febles and Joe Randa were able to turn and take the shots on their backsides.

Aaron Guiel then hit his third straight homer, having hit a grand slam and three-run homer in Wednesday’s 16-8 victory over Colorado. Dee Brown added a two-run homer to make it 5-1 before Park finally got an out by striking out No. 6 batter Mendy Lopez.

Park recorded seven straight outs before a two-out double in the third by Lopez, his last batter. Brent Mayne then hit an RBI single against Ron Mahay for a 6-5 Royals lead.

“Obviously, he’s capable of a lot better. It’s a work in progress,” Rangers manager Buck Showalter said. “When you had the up-and-down year that Chan Ho had last year, hopefully we’ll see some results in the next three weeks.”

Park was 9-8 with a career-high 5.75 ERA last season, when he missed two months because of injuries. He also had a five-game winning streak.

Rodriguez and Gerald Laird had RBI singles in a five-run fourth against Shawn Sedlacek that put the Rangers ahead to stay. Mark Teixeira led off the fifth with a homer to stretch the lead to 11-6.

Mahay was the winning pitcher. Reynaldo Garcia struck out two in a perfect ninth for the save.

Notes: The Royals traded LHP Brian Shackleford and RHP Jeff Austin to Cincinnati for two minor leaguers, INF Damaso Espino and OF Alan Moye. … The Rangers were the visiting team, but it was the first of three straight games at the stadium they share with the Royals. It is Texas’ longest stretch in Surprise this spring.
