Federal grand jury indicts Lawrence man

A Lawrence man was indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury in Kansas City, Kan., according to U.S. Atty. Eric Melgren.

Justin C. White, 26, was charged with two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm Jan. 2 and Jan. 20 in Lawrence. If convicted, White faces a maximum of 10 years in federal prison, without parole, on each count.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Lawrence Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Free speech-language screening offered

A free speech-language screening for children will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ballard Community Center, 708 Elm St.

Douglas County Communicates, which is sponsored by the Sertoma Club, is conducting the screening.

Symposium features KU student research

Bleach in laundry detergents, preschoolers’ memories and bee antennae are among the topics to be showcased Saturday at the sixth annual Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Symposium at Kansas University.

About 70 undergraduate students will present the results of their research projects from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Kansas Union. Video presentations run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the union parlors. Oral presentations are from 9:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Alderson Auditorium. Poster presentations are from noon to 2 p.m. in the Kansas Union Ballroom.

State security official urges continued caution

The Homeland Security Advisory System has lowered the national threat level for a terrorist attack, but Kansans should still take precautions, according to the Adjutant General’s Department.

Information about what to do during the yellow, or elevated, threat level can be found at the Kansas Emergency Management Web site, www.accesskansas.org/kdem.

Precautions include continuing to be alert to suspicious activity. Kansans are advised to expect travel delays and review disaster plans.

Also, as a result of the lowered threat level, Coffey County Lake has reopened. Anglers are required to follow registration requirements.

Lawmaker schedules public ‘office hours’

State Rep. Paul Davis, D-Lawrence, wants to hear from constituents and others on legislative issues.

Davis will meet with the public during “legislative office hours” from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday in the auditorium of the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.
