Hemenway to testify for more federal student financial aid

More funding for low-income students is a high priority — that’s what Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway plans to tell federal education officials at a hearing Friday in Kansas City, Mo.

He also plans to ask for more graduate student aid and for an increase in funding for student loans when he testifies at a U.S. Department of Education hearing on reauthorizing the Higher Education Act.

Hemenway plans to testify on behalf of the Association of American Universities, which represents 62 leading public and private research universities.

The AAU priorities include:

— Increasing access to higher education for low-income students by strengthening support for grants and early intervention programs, particularly the Pell Grant program.

— Increasing financial support for graduate education through the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need and Jacob K. Javits Fellowship programs.

— Increasing student loan borrowing limits, especially for graduate students.

— Improving student loan terms and conditions.

— Ensuring the accountability of higher education institutions through accreditation.

Testimony for the hearing will begin at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Westin Crown Center Century Ballroom, One Pershing Road in Kansas City, Mo.

The hearing is to gather information as federal education officials work on proposals to get the Higher Education Act reauthorized. That law not only deals with student grants and loans, but with university accountability and accreditation.
