Police, attorney brief city commissioners

Lawrence city commissioners met behind closed doors Tuesday with top police officials and the city’s attorney.

Officials would not say what the executive session was about, but cited Kansas Open Meetings Act provisions allowing private meetings to discuss personnel matters and items of client-attorney privilege.

The Lawrence Police Department’s most notable personnel issue lately has been the firing of Officer Stuart “Mike” Peck. In January, Douglas County District Judge Michael Malone ruled Peck had misled the court in applying for a warrant to search a suspected drug dealer’s residence. Malone ordered that evidence gathered during the search be suppressed, causing prosecutors to dismiss the charges. At least 12 other cases involving Peck as a witness have been dropped.

Peck was fired last month, and has said he might sue.

Police Chief Ron Olin and Sgt. Mike Pattrick joined the commissioners, as did the city’s attorney, Jerry Cooley. The session lasted 15 minutes.
