HBO has rummaged through its attic of outtakes to present “Legendary Nights” (9 p.m., HBO), a series of 12 half-hour documentaries about the most memorable fights in the 30-year history of HBO’s ring coverage. The action begins with the much-anticipated welterweight bout between the charismatic Sugar Ray Leonard and Detroit’s Thomas Hearns. Much is made of Leonard’s desire to replace Muhammad Ali as the face of modern boxing, and his success in becoming one of the highest-paid athletes of his era. As journalist Ralph Wiley observes, the fight more than lived up to its hype. “This was everything people in prior eras remembered about Dempsey-Tunney or Robinson-Basilio or Louis-Schmeling. This (had) that level of rivalry.”

• During a campaign swing, Toby, Josh and Donna are stranded in Indiana after Bartlet’s motorcade leaves without them on “The West Wing” (8 p.m., NBC). This is the first of a two-part story that set a meandering and condescending tone for a disappointing season.
• The discovery of skeletal remains exhumes a nasty secret buried since Sept. 11 on “Law & Order” (9 p.m., NBC).
