Cornerback McCoy leaves program

Kansas University will have only one John McCoy on its roster next fall.

KU signed Victor Valley Community College All-American linebacker John McCoy to a letter of intent last month, but sophomore cornerback Johnny McCoy has left the program.

Coach Mark Mangino told fans McCoy had transferred to Southwest Texas during a “Big Blue Monday” gathering in Overland Park.

McCoy was KU’s third-leading tackler last season with 70, ranking behind senior linebackers Greg Cole and Leo Etienne. Freshman linebacker Nick Reid, who made 62 stops, will be the Jayhawks’ top returning tackler next season.

McCoy started 11 of 12 games and had one interception, three pass breakups and two tackles for loss.
