Protest: KU students to rally against possible war

A Kansas University student organization on Wednesday will join a nationwide protest against war with Iraq.

Students for Peace will stage the rally from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Wescoe Beach on KU’s campus. An open microphone will be available for speakers.

Students also will march to the lawn of Fraser Hall, where they will form a human peace sign.

The rally is part of a nationwide protest sponsored by the National Student and Youth Peace Coalition and the 180 Degree Movement for Democracy and Education.

Election: Commission candidates to discuss diversity

A discussion by City Commission candidates about diversity in Lawrence will be part of the first-ever Diversity Issues Summit on Saturday, sponsored by the Kansas University Graduate and Professional Assn.

The six candidates are expected to attend a 1 p.m. discussion in the Multicultural Resource Center on campus. The conference runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Topics for the summit include the Graduate Ambassadors Program, the MRC’s programming and working with local businesses to create a Lawrence Diversity Guide.

The summit is open to the public.

Kansas University: Four from KU seek Goldwater scholarships

Four Kansas University students have been selected to compete for prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships.

The scholarships, awarded in April to about 300 students from across the country in science, engineering and mathematics, provide up to $7,500 for tuition, fees, books and room and board for either one or two years.

KU’s nominees were selected after their submittal of a 600-word essay, several shorter essays and faculty recommendations. The nominees are:

  • John J. Daniels, a Tonganoxie senior majoring in chemical engineering, who wants to research alternatives to fossil fuels.
  • Sarah E. Feldt, a Norman, Okla., junior majoring in mathematics and physics, who wants to research nonlinear dynamics in physics.
  • Kelly N. Flentie, a Sabetha junior majoring in microbiology, who wants to research how pathogens cause disease.
  • Joshua E. Meyers, a Wichita senior majoring in physics and astronomy, who wants to work as a researcher in particle or nuclear physics.

Community: Benefit raises $3,000 for Achievement Place

The second annual benefit for Achievement Place for Girls is being called a big success by those associated with the Lawrence organization.

The event Saturday night at Raoul’s Velvet Room, 815 N. H., raised about $3,000, said Barbara Starr, president of Achievement Place’s board of directors.

About 120 people attended the event, which included raffles and music by Celia, Megan Hurt, Maria Anthony Ardys Ramberg and the Acme Jazz Band.

Achievement Place provides guidance and support for at-risk teens.
