KU runners set four school records

Kansas University track coach Stanley Redwine couldn’t complain about his women finishing fourth and his men ninth in the team standings at the Big 12 Conference Indoor championships.

“We were just points away from higher places on the men’s side,” Redwine said following the weekend competition at Lincoln, Neb. “And our women competed and fought like crazy and that’s the best that we’ve placed in Big 12 history, so we’re excited about that.”

Sophomore Kim Clark was KU’s only gold-medal winner. Clark clocked a school-record 1:20.38 Saturday to win the 600-meter run, besting the time of 1:20.93 she recorded in Friday’s prelims.

“I didn’t know the record was that attainable because I had never looked at it, so it feels great,” said Clark, an Elkhorn, Neb., product who finished third last season.

Three other school records were established.

Clark also anchored the women’s 1,600-meter relay team that included Brooklyn Hann, Stacy Keller and Shamieka McField that finished second in a school-record time of 3:41.17.

KU senior Robbie Harriford recorded school-record times in both the 60 (7.53 seconds) and the 200 (24.14) in Friday’s semifinals, but in Saturday’s finals settled for eighth place in the 200 with a time of 24.35.

The best individual finishes among the men were thirds by Anson Jackson in the 60 hurdles and Benaud Shirley in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 50 feet, 10 inches.
